Heritage Breed Chickens
Nubian Goat Kids
Hi! I'm Kat, I'm the face behind "The Little Herd". A mum, small business owner & small hobby farmer a total glutton for punishment.
My love of animals began as a young child. I've always done a bit of fostering or spending my free time helping out at shelters.
I finally got my own dog back in 2016. He was an aged cattle x border collie with a big past. He was terrified of men, and hands, and loud voices. He had a terrible grass allergy that had festered long enough to resemble mange. I got him healthy and happy, and he even found a specific set of men that he enjoyed the comfort of. Losing him in 2019 was one of the hardest things I have ever endured. I vowed to ensure I would remain a safe space for the unwanted, so I did.
To date I have fostered many more dogs and cats. I have adopted dogs with unfair labels and have proven most of those labels wrong. I rehabilitated a thoroughbred with horrible hooves & health. I have bottle fed goats and taken in unwanted chickens and muscovies. I have been a safe haven for a few animals owned by lovely people that I have met along the way.
Getting into chickens began with trying to be more self sufficient. "5 chickens max", I said... I prefer to not keep count anymore. I have completed a Certificate III in Animal Care & am happy to share the knowledge I have learnt over the years, though I am always learning and evolving to do best by the animals in my care. I don't pretend to know it all.. trust me, I don't! But I can confidently say everything I do, I give 110% & I hope that shows in the health, temperaments and personalities of what we produce.
From the day a kid is born or a chick hatches, they are individuals in our care, not stock. That personal attention shows in every animal we produce.
Due to biosecurity reasons we don't offer walk-throughs however we are as transparent as we can be while keeping our animals safe. Please feel welcome to ask any questions you have, or ask for more photos of the parents & the living arrangements.
Our relationship doesn't end at collection, we provide lifelong advice on our animals and genuinely love hearing updates
Our eggs, birds, and kids are sold direct from our property. No pet stores, no brokers. Raised by our hands, with our standards, on our land.
Bought my girl from The Little Herd late last year.
She was a gorgeous well socialised pullet and since then she has grown beautifully.
Kat has been amazing with providing support and advice as I'm new to managing my own flock.
She answers all my questions and has sent links to products in the past to help me make sure my hens are as healthy as possible. I am so happy with my girl and will definitely be buying my next hens from The Little Herd.
Reach out and we'll get back to you promptly.
